Testing
Having official test scores are incredibly beneficial for applying for jobs or programs that require specific levels of language. These official test scores indicate your independently tested language level. Students that are interested in receiving official testing scores for their language skills should consider taking an Oral Proficiency Interview or a Defense Language Proficiency Test.
Oral Proficiency Interview
An Oral Proficiency Interview, or OPI, is the testing of an individual’s ability to speak the language. At this time, UNC does not offer free OPI testing; however, students may pay for an OPI or OPIc (a computerized version of the OPI) through Language Testing International. The OPI consists of several parts, often including a role-playing section. Students should prepare for this test by practicing telling stories and discussing topics in-depth. This test is useful for positions/programs that may need the individual to be able to communicate in the target language (ie translator, etc).
Defense Language Proficiency Test
The Defense Language Proficiency Test, or DLPT, is a test designed to measure listening and reading comprehension in the target language. Currently, UNC offers free DLPT testing through the DLPT Lab run by UNC Air Force ROTC. Students that are interested in using this resource should reach out to Captain Juan Rodriguez. This test is useful for positions/programs that may need the individual to be able to analyze and read information in the target language (ie analyst, etc).
